We all store food in the fridge to keep it fresh, but did you know that some foods actually lose their flavor, texture, and nutritional value when refrigerated? Here are foods you should stop storing in the fridge right now.
1. Tomatoes
Cold air stops the ripening process and can make tomatoes mealy and flavorless. Store them on the counter at room temperature for the best taste and texture.
2. Bread
Many people refrigerate bread to prevent mold, but the cold actually makes bread go stale faster. The starch molecules in bread recrystallize more quickly at cooler temperatures. Instead, keep what you’ll eat within a few days on the counter and freeze the rest.
3. Honey
Honey is one of the few foods that never spoils. Refrigerating it causes crystallization, making it thick and grainy. Keep it sealed in your pantry where it will stay smooth and pourable for years.
4. Potatoes
Cold temperatures convert the starch in potatoes into sugar more quickly, which can affect both flavor and texture. Store them in a cool, dark place – but not in the fridge. A paper bag in the pantry is ideal.
5. Onions
Onions need air circulation to stay fresh. The moisture in a fridge can make them soft and moldy. Keep them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. But keep them away from potatoes – they release gases that cause each other to spoil faster!
6. Avocados
If your avocados aren’t ripe yet, keep them on the counter. Refrigeration slows down the ripening process significantly. Only put them in the fridge once they’re ripe and you’re not ready to eat them yet.
